Barry started training professionally at the age of 21 when he was a junior sociology major at University of New Orleans when he walked into Russell Jones's Kickboxing Gym in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He made his pro debut on November 2, 2002 at the U.S. Open International Martial Arts championships, winning the national title in Sanshou over Robert Parham. Then he left Russell's gym and pursued kickboxing full time with Master Shawn Liu at LIU International in New Orleans. A year later Barry participated at Kung-fu World Championships in China, winning a silver medal.
In June 2005, Barry fought twice in the USASKF Art of War II Sanshou Professional Fights in Atlanta, GA. He won both a US National Sanshou Team Spot and a World Title by knocking out Paul Gurevidius. In November 2003, as a US National Team member Barry participated at the Wushu Kung-fu World Championships in Macau, China, winning a silver medal. In December 2004, he won the K. Superstar Title in New Orleans. From 2002 through 2008, he visited China four times with his Coach Shawn Liu and competed in one of Shandong's stadiums and trained with Chinese national Sanshou Team at the Shaolin Temple.
He also participated in "Journey to the East" documentary filmed in China and was named by the Shaolin Temple Masters as the True Shaolin Warrior of the west.
In 2004 he took part of K-1 tryouts held in Las Vegas and made his K-1 debut on April 30, 2005 at K-1 World Grand Prix 2005 in Las Vegas, losing by split decision to Scott Lighty. Barry's grandmother was killed and his family home was lost when Hurricane Katrina struck his native New Orleans in 2005.[3]
In 2006 Barry moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands to train with four time K-1 World Champion Ernesto Hoost.[4] In 2007 he participated in two K-1 World GP tournaments held in Honolulu, Hawaii and Las Vegas, Nevada.
In May 2008 he made his World Combat League debut in the 235 lb (107 kg) weight class fighting for the New York Clash. He fought four fights with a total record of 3–1 in the heavyweight division and fought with the team through the championships.
Barry chose to make his MMA debut on May 30, 2008 with the Combat USA organization. Whilst there he fought 3 times, winning two fights via TKO with leg kicks, and the other fight by KO with a 1 second head kick, ending each of the bouts in the first round. After obtaining the Title he moved directly to the UFC.
On December 27, 2008, Barry made his successful debut in the UFC against Dan Evensen, at UFC 92, injuring the Norwegian's left knee with brutal low kicks at 2:36 of Round Barry fought UFC newcomer Tim Hague at UFC 98, After winning much of the exchanges in the feet Barry was taken down by Hague and submitted early in the first round with a guillotine choke. His next fight was against fellow kickboxer Antoni Hardonk on October 24, 2009 at UFC 104.[5] Barry won by technical knockout due to punches in the second round. After weathering several leg kicks and punches in the first round from Hardonk, Barry found his range in the second round with devastating fast jab combinations, Stunning Hardonk several times before dropping him followed by a flurry of strikes to finish the fight at 2:30 of round 2 for a victory via TKO due to punches.
Barry earned Knockout of the Night and Fight of the Night honors at UFC 104. According to a recent UFC Countdown show, the event earned him $134,000.} In an interview, Barry said he was broke, lived on ketchup and rice, and was about to be evicted from his home in six days.[6] In addition to battling heavy financial burden, this fight was also very personal for Barry as he was fighting a member of Ernesto Hoost's camp. Barry claimed that Hoost, a former K-1 champion, gave up on him, resulting in a falling-out between the two. Barry also said that he waited five years for validation and finally got it when he knocked Antoni Hardonk out.[7]
Barry was next scheduled to fight Gilbert Yvel, but his opponent was later changed. Instead he fought PRIDE legend Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 115 in Vancouver, Canada.[8] Barry dropped Filipović twice in the first round, but ultimately lost the bout via submission (due to a rear naked choke) in round 3. Patrick sustained a broken hand and foot in the fight and he was placed in a wheelchair in the immediate aftermath.[9]
Barry's next fight was against "The Mexicutioner" Joey Beltran at UFC: Fight For The Troops 2 on January 22, 2011, in Fort Hood, Texas.[10] Barry used effective leg kicks in the bout to eventually wear down the mobility of Beltran and win a unanimous decision. At the end of the bout, he jokingly "fired" Matt Mitrione. This was likely a joke based on Mitrione firing his agent publicly after a previous fight.
Barry next fought fellow striker Cheick Kongo on June 26, 2011 in the main event UFC on Versus 4.[11] He lost the fight via knockout in the first round in stunning fashion when early in the first round Barry dropped and stunned Kongo, after weathering the flurry of strikes by Barry, Kongo (who was still in wobbly legs) caught Barry with an overhand right on the ear followed by an uppercut to the chin knocking Pat out cold.[12]
Barry faced Stefan Struve on October 1, 2011 at UFC on Versus 6[13] losing via submission (triangle armbar) in the second round.
Barry is expected to face Christian Morecraft on January 20, 2012 at UFC Fight Night 26.[14]
Barry stated that his three heroes were his mother, Mike Tyson and Sagat, a Thaiboxer from the Street Fighter video games.[15]
In interviews, he always jokes about wanting to be a ninja ever since a young age. Pat Barry lost his grandmother in the Hurricane Katrina Disaster.[16]
